Living in Tecumseh: A Community Guide

by Kris Ramotar

Community Overview

Sandwiched between Windsor and Lakeshore lies the beautiful suburb of Tecumseh. This affluent community is home to about 25,000 residents and is known for its warm hospitality and community events.

Residents enjoy a balance of small-town charm, big-city amenities, and industrial opportunities. Tecumseh offers many fine restaurants, shopping areas, and medical facilities for its residents to visit, and its proximity to Windsor provides residents with access to even more amenities.

Housing Options and Neighborhoods

Like many towns in Windsor Essex County, Tecumseh has seen explosive growth over the years. Tecumseh has a robust variety of attractive single-family homes along with a moderate selection of condos and townhomes -- making options available for every type of buyer.

In the heart of Tecumseh, buyers can find traditional and ranch style homes, with many featuring brick walls, attached garages, spacious driveways, and beautiful front yards. North Tecumseh offers luxury neighborhoods and waterfront properties along St. Clair Beach.

To the south of Tecumseh, properties expand into a suburban farm-town atmosphere for those who enjoy large, spacious yards. The variety of peaceful, single-family homes makes Tecumseh a great place for those wanting to raise a family or to settle down to enjoy a calm lifestyle.

City Gems

Since Tecumseh borders Lake St. Clair and is near Lake Eerie and the Detroit River, it experiences long summers with mild winters which is great for year-round activities. Tecumseh has acres of greenspace with almost 40 parks as well as trails and sports fields.

For those who enjoy indoor activities like shopping, the north and central parts of Tecumseh offer several blocks of shopping centers. There are also tons of unique restaurants, bars, and wineries for foodies to explore. Tecumseh has an abundance of opportunities to stay busy, but here are a few town favorites.

 Lakewood Park

This former golf course was converted to the community’s most prized park. Sitting on the coast of Lake St. Clair, Lakewood Park offers an immaculate waterfront view from a boardwalk as well as plenty of green space for community events and recreational activities. Paved walking paths weave between trees connecting the park’s different amenities. Lakewood park offers outdoor exercise equipment, a rock climbing boulder, and eighteen hole disk golf course. Families can frequent the seasonal concession stand for snacks and ice cream then relax at the many chairs and tables available. Click Here for a virtual tour of Lakewood Park!

 Tecumseh Corn Festival

Under normal circumstances, Tecumseh is home to several festivals and concerts including the Taste of Tecumseh Food and Wine Festival. The most notable festival, however, is the Tecumseh Corn Festival which has been ranked one of the top 50 festivals in the province! This is a big deal since there are over 3,000 festivals that take place in Ontario each year.

At the Corn Festival, attendees chow down on freshly grown corn and feast on a spread of dishes made from the prized grain. The festival is packed full of events including corn eating contests, car shows, sports tournaments, and beauty pageants! This 3-day festival is an amazing opportunity for the community to celebrate and have a blast. Whether a local or a visitor, this festival is certainly not one to miss!

 Tecumseh Arena

The Tecumseh Arena is a favorite venue to locals as it provides year-round ice pads for the community. Tecumseh Arena offers two regulation-size ice surfaces for public and private sessions.  In June and July, the ice is removed from one pad to serve as a large floor space for lacrosse, indoor soccer, and large banquets. The arena operates a snack bar during fall and winter to serve a variety of snacks and beverages. Click Here for a virtual tour of Tecumseh Arena!

Schools

Several schools are dispersed throughout the Tecumseh area, and all are within close proximity to most Tecumseh homes for sale. Many of the schools are French Immersion programs since Tecumseh started as a small Franco-Ontarian settlement. Click Here for a complete school directory.

Business

Tecumseh is known to be a bedroom community as the majority of its residents commute to work. In fact, its extensive transportation network and proximity to Windsor positioned it as an ideal location for commuters. The town has its own 38-stop  transit service which runs 30 kilometres long, and it also shares transportation resources with the city of Windsor which makes it even easier for commuters to reach the city.

The town has a growing industrial and commercial sector with food processing being one of its major industries. One of Tecumseh’s larger employers, Bonduelle Group, operates a food processing plant near the heart of the town. Dedicated to sustainable planned development and wealth creation, Tecumseh hopes to see more industries take root in the town.
